Improved UVC LEDs with COFAN Super Pillar™ Technology

Updated: Oct 30, 2018

UVC LED

What is UVC Technology?

Ultraviolet C (UVC) is mainly used for disinfection purposes, and the technology provides hospitals a simple and environmentally friendly way to disinfect their air conditioning and water systems without toxic or corrosive materials. Originally, UVC lights were large and bulky, but thanks to technological advances, UVC lights are becoming smaller and lighter than before. UVC technology can be applied to make self-disinfecting toothbrushes, baby bottles, and tap water—the possibilities are endless. UVC technology can save lives, so why aren’t we using it everywhere? There are two problems with UVC technology: Heat and UV Radiation.

UVC Technology | Issue 1: Heat

Issue 1: Heat

UVC technology is still maturing, with a major barrier being the heat the UVC LEDs produce. The heat is actually a side effect of UVC LEDs’ low efficiency, with 10% or less of the energy converted into light, and the rest into heat. As UVC LEDs become more powerful, they generate more heat and require better cooling. Like all electronics, heat can shorten its lifespan and eventually lead to hardware failure.

Issue 2: UV Radiation

Traditional MCPCBs are manufactured from a sheet of metal, with the copper circuit layer attached to a dielectric layer of thermally conductive and electronically insulating epoxy. However, the UV radiation inherent in UVC (and all UV lighting) degrades organic substances such as epoxy, which significantly reduce the lifespan of MCPCBs and its cost-effectiveness.

COFAN’s Solution: UVC Ceramic PCB™ with Super Pillar™ Technology

COFAN’s innovative solution is to use electronics-grade ceramic combined with our newly patented Super Pillar™ technology that’s proven to increase heat dissipation by more than 100 times compared to a traditional MCPCB. The Super Pillar™ bypasses the dielectric pre-preg and adds metal for a direct thermal path. The UVC Ceramic PCB™️is resistant to UV radiation, enhancing the lifespan and cost-effectiveness compared to a normal MCPCB. By overcoming the thermal and radiation issues inherent with UVC and UV lighting in general, COFAN is building a safer, brighter future for all.
